Hi girls — missed you yesterday! So sorry I didn’t write a post; I spent the entire day at a shoot with Motions, the fabulous black haircare brand. To celebrate their new naturalista product line, Naturally You, they hosted a “Motions Natural Girl” contest (real women submitted videos and essays explaining why they were the ultimate curly girls). Yesterday, the three contest winners were treated to head-to-toe makeovers — badass celeb hairstylist Ursula Stephen was on hair duty; I oversaw the beauty and wardrobe! The girls were gorgeous, the Motions team is hilarious, the catering was superb, and I got to make super-important pronouncements like: “Mint nails, I think. No wait — lemon. Lemon!” We filmed the whole thing…can’t wait to show you the video 🙂
In the meantime, I absolutely couldn’t wait to share with you my two new hair obsessions. As you know, I’m transitioning and currently have about six inches of ultra-curly roots — which makes trying to rock a sleek side-ponytail a challenge. At the shoot I’d keep smoothing the roots down, but they’d persistently pop up (I have this one section of new growth on the right that’s particularly sassy. It thinks my frantic flat-ironing is hilarious; those curls ain’t going nowhere). Tired of seeing me run over to the mirror to tend to my hair, one of Ursula’s assistants intercepted me. “Stop worrying about pressing down your roots on the sides and in the back,” she said. “All that matters is that the front lays flat. No one can tell the rest is puffy.” She grabbed Motions Shine Enhancing Pomade, rubbed a tiny bit between her fingers, ran it along my hairline and smoothed it out with a fine tooth comb. Let me tell you, my edges laid down for the rest of the shoot, which was three more hours at that point. And she was right — my ponytail looked so sleek and glam! Look at that picture! Would you ever guess that I have mad new growth? Such a live-saver.
My other big share of the day is the Cricket Ultra Smooth Argan and Olive Oil Detangling Comb ($4.99). This thing is so science-fiction fab, I can’t. Argan and olive oil is actually baked into this comb, so every time you run it through your strands, it leaves behind a trace of the glossifying, moisturizing oils. It lasts up to a year (nice), and you can use it on dry or wet hair. I combed it through my pony before the shoot and it gave me the sexiest shine boost. Amazing-mazing.
