One of the perks of being a beauty editor? You end up with supremely talented makeup artist friends who indulge you in your favorite pastime — playing “makeup dress-up” and posing for provocative Instagram pics you instantly delete.
Enter my celeb makeup artist girlfriend, Brandy Gomez Duplessis (she’s worked with Kim, Kerry, Angela B; and this year she was the head MUA at NBA All Star Weekend and Sundance!). I met her when I was Essence.com’s beauty editor, and we were teamed up to do ambush makeovers at Essence Music Festival 2010. She had sexed-up black hair, electric pink vinyl lips and lashes for days. She made up words like “glamxurious.” It was instant love. After we finished working, she sat me in her chair, transformed me into a Pointer Sister on acid, and we squealed about smokey eyes for like an hour. Which is basically what happened last Saturday! A sedate coffee date between friends turned into this:
Beauty fantasia! And in the middle of the tornado of eyeshadow, lashes and lipglosses, Brandy and I stumbled upon a fab new look we christened “SparkleLips.” First, you layer on a bright lip color — Brandy used Stila Long Wear Liquid Lip Color ($22), Fiery for her and Petal for me. Next, use your finger to dab on a complimentary glitter powder in the center of your lips — she used NYX Glitter Powder ($2.99), Apple for her and Pink for me. Et voila! A matte, glittery, ultra-festive lip look perfect for a night out with the girls. Or a drag ball. Fun!
