Rainy Day Recipe

Hey muchachitas,

So, I thought that once you went natural, you no longer had to stress out on rainy, humid days. With no blowout to keep intact, who cares if it’s foggy with a vague mist in the air (I hate those half-assed sprinkles…either rain or DON’T)? This spring, I’ve learned that even natural hair can look crazy in the humidity. My curls, which are defined and bouncy on clear days, get cotton candy fluffy, poufy and just…vague. Like, you’d look at my hair and a thought bubble question mark would appear over your head. Like, what is that look exactly? Is it a misbegotten curly ‘do, or a Diana Rossian fuzz extravaganza? And if it’s the latter, is it voluntary? Plus, my crown is a totally different texture than the rest of my hair (as my friend Jennifer says, “I have the entire African diaspora up in my head”). It’s prone to epic frizz even on sunny days, so it hemorrhages if there’s a hint of moisture in the air.

Tousle Me Softly. Best product name, ever.

Tousle Me Softly. Best product name, ever.

You know I don’t like to use a lot of product on my hair. But on days like today, I have no choice. And I found the perfect cocktail! On my puffy crown, I use mousse. Yep, mousse…Herbal Essences Tousle Me Softly, which is totally lightweight, uncrunchy, and not at all drying. Out of the shower, I randomly separate the area six ways and slap a palm full of mouse along the parts. I scrunch a little, et voila! My shady area is defined and protected against puffing up.

On the rest of my hair, I rub a dime-sized amount of John Frieda Full Repair Repairing Oil Elixir allover. The soft, light hair oil was formulated to strengthen weak, damaged strands — which it does — but that’s not why I use it.  Honestly, I find that it’s one of the best humidity-repellants on shelves. And it glossifies gorgeously. Once I’ve applied the mousse and the oil, I flip my head upside down, diffuse for a minute, and go. Brilliant! The humidity can’t see me!

Girls, take notes and run to the CVS stat, before the next rainstorm hits.

xxoo,

T. Trilliams
